How it works
You tell the service what you take, usually with a photo of your current prescription or the medicine box, and answer a few questions. A doctor reviews it and, if it is appropriate, sends a prescription to the pharmacy you choose. Some services do this from a form; others need a consultation.
How long a prescription lasts
Since March 2024 an Irish prescription can be valid for up to 12 months. A pharmacist can extend a 6-month prescription to 12 months in total. After 12 months you need to see a doctor again for a new one.
What can’t be renewed this way
Schedule 2 and 3 controlled drugs, such as strong opioid painkillers, can’t be repeated at all, and controlled-drug prescriptions must be on paper or sent through Healthmail. Most sleeping tablets and benzodiazepines can be repeated for up to 6 months but not extended by the pharmacist. Expect your own GP to manage these.
