How an online GP visit works
You book on the provider’s website or app, pay, and a GP calls you by phone or video, usually at a set time. They can give advice, a medical certificate, a prescription sent to your pharmacy, or tell you to be seen in person. Have your medicines and any relevant history to hand.
What it costs, really
Prices on the board are what each provider publishes for a standard consultation. Some add a fee for a cert or a prescription; we show those where published. You can claim 20% back through medical expenses tax relief. Work out your cost.
When an online GP is the wrong choice
For a life-threatening emergency, call 112 or 999. For a minor illness a pharmacist can treat (such as uncomplicated cystitis, cold sores or thrush), try the pharmacy first. For urgent care when your own GP is closed, your GP out-of-hours service is free with a medical card or GP visit card. What an online GP can and can’t do.
Questions
Often asked.
- How much does an online GP cost in Ireland?
- We list 15 pay-as-you-go online GP services. Published weekday prices run from €34.99 to €55, and weekend prices from €34.99. Some charge more in the evening and at weekends; others charge one flat fee.
- Are online GPs in Ireland real Irish doctors?
- A doctor treating patients in Ireland must be registered with the Irish Medical Council, and the Council holds remote consultations to the same standard as in-person ones. You can check any doctor's registration on the Medical Council's public register.
- Can I claim tax back on an online GP visit?
- Yes. GP fees qualify for medical expenses tax relief at 20%. Claim through Revenue myAccount, during the year or for up to four years back, on fees nobody refunded you for.
- Do I need to be registered with the online GP?
- Usually you create an account with the service when you book. You don't leave your own GP. Medical Council guidance says a doctor seeing you remotely should update your own GP unless you don't consent.
- Is an online GP free with a medical card?
- No. Online GP services charge a fee whether or not you have a medical card. Your medical card or GP visit card covers your own GP and the HSE GP out-of-hours service.
