Which one do I need?
GP out-of-hours (HSE co-ops) is for when your surgery is closed and you urgently need a GP. It is by appointment only: you phone, a triage nurse calls you back. It is free with a medical card or GP visit card. It is not for repeat prescriptions, test results or medical certificates.
An online GP suits things that can be handled by video or phone: a sick cert, a repeat prescription, a question that can’t wait until Monday. You pay a fee.
An injury unit treats recent injuries that are not life-threatening, with no appointment needed. The emergency department is for serious injury or life-threatening illness.

Questions
Often asked.
- Is the GP out-of-hours service free?
- It is free if you show a valid medical card or GP visit card. Otherwise a fee is charged; most services don't publish the amount.
- Can I walk in to a GP out-of-hours centre?
- No. The HSE says it is by appointment only. You phone, a triage nurse calls you back, and they arrange advice, an appointment or a home visit.
- Can out-of-hours give me a sick cert or a repeat prescription?
- The HSE says GP out-of-hours is not for repeat prescriptions, test results or medical certificates. An online GP or your own GP is the route for those.
- When should I call 112 or 999 instead?
- When someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk. Both numbers are free, and you can text 112 if you cannot make a voice call.
